The current president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, announced on Sunday evening that she would introduce a bill to postpone elections to April 2024 in response to social protests that are taking place in various parts of the country against her government.

“Interpreting the will of the citizens in its broadest sense, I have decided to take the lead in reaching an agreement with the Congress of the Republic to postpone the general elections to April 2024,” the President said in an address to the nation with the reason for the violent demonstrations this weekend, which resulted in two people died and several dozen were injured.

Thus, the President of Peru, who took office after the resignation of Pedro Castillo, as established in the country’s Constitution, explained that “in the coming days” she will send a bill to Congress for “coordination with the political forces represented in Parliament.” .

Boluarte indicated that the approval of this law implies constitutional reforms, and his cabinet “will also contribute to the agreement in the Congress of the Republic of a law on the reform of the political system.”

“I call on all political forces from regions and provinces, authorities, civil society and the Peruvian people to take part in this process so that a wave of democratic will and national responsibility will lead and guide us,” he added.

Boluart also declared a state of emergency “in areas of high social conflict”. “Declaration of a state of emergency in areas of increased social tension.
