Giovani Felipe Pilipic Neves, 25, died this Sunday by drowning on Praia Grossa, in Itapema, on the north coast of Santa Catarina (4). He was rescued by firefighters and taken to the hospital alive, but he could not stand it.

The young man was swimming in Praia Grossa in Itapema with his younger brother of 16 years old. Both drowned and had to be rescued.

Giovani went into cardiac arrest, the most severe form of drowning. After an hour of maneuvering, he was stabilized and taken alive to the Ruth Cardoso hospital in Balneario Camboriu.

The death was confirmed by family and friends on social media in the early hours of Monday (5). Giovani was born in Maringa (PR) and recently lived in Itapema where he opened a restaurant serving hamburgers.

“How my heart shrinks, my brother, how much I miss you. I can’t believe that he is gone, so young, full of life and always happy,” Giovani’s friend commented on social networks.

“It is very difficult to accept the departure of such a young man. Friend, thank you for showing that it is very important to rejoice, to rejoice in today, ”wrote another friend of the victim.

A fireman who was walking along the beach carried out the first rescue operation. The victim was accompanied by his 16-year-old brother, who was also rescued from first-degree drowning. The teenager was stabilized and released on the spot.

In addition to military firefighters, the event was attended by BOA (Air Operations Battalion) and Samu. With the help of a helicopter, it was possible to give the young man additional support in his life with special medications and procedures to reverse the cardiorespiratory arrest.

The stabilized victim was taken to the Ruth Cardoso Municipal Maternity Hospital in Balneario Camboriu.

Fire service manuals show that rip currents are responsible for more than 90% of drownings in salt water.

Currents are a reverse flow of water that returns from the coast to the sea, forming a corridor with a current that can carry a person off the beach in a few seconds.

On beaches guarded by lifeguards, the reverse current is determined by two red flags on the sandy strip. Swimming in the sea between two flags is not recommended.

In order to recognize the reverse flow on unguarded beaches, one must pay attention to some of their characteristics: the waves in these places do not break, and the color of the water tends to differ from the rest of the beach, becoming darker.

If you can swim, swim to the side and, once you get out of the current, you can swim back to shore. Don’t try to swim against the current; this is a common mistake that can quickly lead to severe fatigue.

If you can’t swim, don’t despair. First, try to send a signal so that the lifeguards and/or bathers are aware of the situation. Second, stay calm and try to swim in the water until help arrives; the reverse current has an end and will not lead you to the middle of the ocean.
