Five women charged with xenophobia this Friday (25) by the 1st police station of Crisiuma, in the south of Santa Catarina. The investigation was launched after a complaint was filed with the State Ministry. The offense is provided for in Art. 20 of Law no. 7716/89, defining criminal behavior as a result of racial or colored prejudice.
According to delegate Jorge Giraldo, the crime occurred after the end of the first round of the 2022 elections in a Whatsapp group in which some members began to insult and attack residents of the northeast.
The police authority testified that they were included in the investigation: prints conversations exchanged between women, as well as a video published in the group with threats to residents of the Northeast.
The six members of the band were heard on stage by the police. According to Giraldo, one of them, a teacher, was expelled for not committing a crime.
“It’s good that these people are subjected to some form of criminal liability in order to prevent the spread of these hate speeches in the future (…) the prejudice was directed only at the Northeasters, none of them could explain to me why they directed insults only at residents of the Northeast, and not everyone who followed the same political bias,” he explained.
