The wing of the plane, covered in several parts with electrical tape, attracted the attention of netizens this week. Experts, however, assure that, despite the excess of “patches”, there is nothing to worry about.
A viral image posted on Twitter by singer David Wakeham shows the wing of an Australian Qantas aircraft covered in pieces of duct tape. Information taken from the “Page not found” page of the Extra portal.
David was concerned about the Australian airline’s priorities and captioned the photo: “When choosing your favorite airline, choose wisely. @Qantas, profit over safety.”
However, ABC’s “CheckMate” fact checker took a look at the photo and concluded it was “speed tape” often used to cover paint damage caused by UV rays.
“The tape pictured, known as speed tape, is used regularly in the aircraft industry, and in this case it was probably used to cover peeling paint,” he explained. Thus, peeling paint is nothing more than an aesthetic problem, not a technical one.
A Boeing spokesman told industry publication Simple Flying that it was “just a cosmetic issue.”
