Of the public works soap opera series in Florianopolis, the revival of Avenida das Rendeiras is perhaps one of the most controversial. There have been many chapters related to the work at Lagoa da Conceição which started in October 2020 and was supposed to be completed in February 2021 but is not ready yet.

According to prosecutor Daniel Paladino, “The main discrepancy was precisely with regard to the tactile floor, on which it was decided that this floor would be extended beyond the pavement, as well as issues regarding the bike path, issues regarding the floor of the moving path, there was a lot of hesitation.” But these adjustments will be made this week and next by the mayor’s office.”

This Tuesday (13) the MPSC (Ministry of State of Santa Catarina) carried out a third performance review to keep an eye on what is being done and what still needs to be done. The visit was also attended by NIDI (Intersectoral Core for Inclusion), representatives from CREA-SC (Regional Council for Engineering and Agronomy of Santa Catarina), UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina) and municipal authorities.

For promoter Paladino, the balance was positive: “We have managed to reach a consensus that will not entail a huge cost for the mayor’s office, but at the same time will bring a lot of security and a lot of quality in the movement of people. “.

Upon completion of the work, 2.2 km of the avenue should be revived. It is planned to replace the current sidewalks with paving stones, arrange accessible bicycle paths and sidewalks, and build wooden decks. The idea was to improve traffic in the area, both for pedestrians and vehicles. But the whole delay, which is more than a year and a half, has led to the opposite result: a lot of inconvenience.

One of the main concerns was the placement of a tactile floor for visually impaired people. There were many questions about the right place to install. After the visit, the institutions announced that they had reached an agreement on the necessary adjustments.

“The tactile floor continues at the edge. Where there is no water, we will make 60 cm of grass and then a slight slope and so on throughout the site,” said the municipality’s secretary for infrastructure, Valter Gallina.

The work, which has a budget of almost 5 million reais, is one of the most anticipated by the community, especially on the eve of the summer season. Mayor Topazio Neto said the new deadline should meet the 90-day limit for the completion of the work.

According to Topazio, “If something is missing this season, it will be works that will not interfere with mobility and that, in the end, we can even wait to finish a small section of pavement or something until the end of the season. We have at least 90 more days, and now this work is no longer dependent on traffic interruptions, so we can work with peace of mind and should arrive in the summer with a fully completed work.
