The child was in a stroller when the woman passed by, picked him up and went to the exit, accompanied by another person.
Moments after the baby was taken away, the parents turned around and were startled to not find the baby in the stroller. Then they both started calling for help.
The father ran to warn the store’s guards to lock the doors, preventing the movement of people. According to local police, as soon as the exits were closed, the woman returned to the father of the child, said that the girl was in her friend’s lap, and stated that it was actually a joke. The family took the child away, and security called the police.
The couple were arrested for attempted kidnapping. At the police station, the women continued to claim that the case was just a joke.
Uncertainty
This was not an isolated case. It was the second attempted kidnapping in South Africa in two weeks. In this case, also captured on a CCTV camera, a man pulled a girl out of a shopping cart while her mother was browsing the market stalls.
The mother quickly noticed that her daughter was kidnapped, and managed to take the baby out of her hands. The suspect also claimed the case was a joke, but was arrested for attempted kidnapping.
