The mother of 23-year-old Kesley Viala, who died while in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody, will at least be able to say goodbye to her son.
Following the news of the young man’s death, Kesley’s mother Rose Vial set up an online crowdfunding campaign to raise the amount needed to transport the body from New Mexico to Danbury, Connecticut, where she resides.
“Thanks to you, we managed to get the necessary amount for this, so let’s write down our gratitude and affection to everyone who offered to donate or share. It wouldn’t have been possible without you!” Rose reports.
She explains that the money raised will be used for funerals and other family needs.
The boy’s mother lived in the USA for 19 years and dreamed of their reunion. Kesley tried to enter the country illegally to reunite with her mother.
Prior to this, Kesley lived with her grandmother in Camboriu, on the north coast of Santa Catarina. He was arrested at the border in El Paso, Texas, after trying to enter the country without papers in late April.
On April 29, Kesley was transferred to ICE custody pending deportation proceedings. On August 17, the young man was found unconscious in a pre-trial detention center and taken to the hospital of the University of New Mexico, where he died.
Justice for Our El Paso Neighbors has announced that this Thursday (1) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, there will be a vigil to honor the life of Kesley Vial.
The tribute will take place outside Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
