This Thursday (25th) started the first day of the new work schedule for the revitalization of SC-406 in Florianopolis. From now on, traffic will alternate in the half-lane from 9:00 to 12:00 and from 13:30 to 17:00 from Monday to Friday. This is a measure designed to reduce urban mobility disruptions in the region.

However, whenever traffic is closed, congestion occurs. Construction began in June and is expected to be completed within a year. Some traders complained.

“Entrepreneurs report a 60% decline [no movimento]. This is, in the long run, completely unsustainable. We are very happy that the work is going on. We really wanted this. We fought for sidewalks. But we need it to be done in a way that doesn’t create so many problems for the community,” said trader Nayara Romagnoli.

The highway is owned by the state, but the city of Florianopolis is in charge of the project. Investments amount to 11 million reais. According to the Department of City Infrastructure, it is not possible to hold the service at night.

“At night, this plant that you have here along the highway is only ecologically free until 17:00. The company also has a power plant, it is located 60 km from here. As asphalt is transported from there, the temperature tends to drop, making compaction difficult. This is an unsafe job, as happened in other countries, ”explained Walter Gallina, secretary of the capital’s infrastructure department.

Some residents believe that it was possible to work at night. Retired Ivonete Leonete Nunez is one of them: “No. [seria ruim]. It doesn’t matter to me. You have to do it, right?”

For most residents of the shores of SC-406, the nighttime revival will bring more inconvenience, according to the Rio Tavares Community Council. “Mainly because of the noise. We went to Porto da Lagoa asking us about working at night and 90% said they would not accept it,” said the president of the institution, Tairone Gonçalves.

Revitalization is a long-standing request of residents. Council Secretary Silas Batuel Cunha recalled that the work had been expected “for a long time. Several requests have already been received to carry out work and lay new asphalt. This asphalt is already very old, there are a lot of holes in it, when it rains, a lot of flooding.”

Carlos Alberto Berkenbrock, a civil servant, has been living in Campeche for 20 years now. He had to adapt his daily routine due to work. “For any appointment, I always leave a little early. There are days when I pass up to ten times on this stretch between the height of the river Tavares and the easement of Cuadros. So we adapted to this situation,” he said.

In addition to traffic jams, the dust has given more work to those who live near the highway. “There is a lot of dust, a lot of movement, a lot of traffic, but everything will be fine. You have to be patient and get better for us,” said elderly caregiver Maria de Lourdes Souza.

The prefecture will monitor the response to the new work schedule and evaluate new measures as necessary. With a decrease in the pace of work, changes in the schedule and deadlines for the revitalization are possible.

“We are doing our best to complete the runways, drainage and asphalting by the end of the year. We need to finish, because at this moment there is already heavy traffic without work and without tourism. When a tourist arrives, it will increase even more,” said Gallina.
