A year ago, Balneario Camboriú, on the north coast of Santa Catarina, began one of the most important works in the history of the city, developed since the 1990s, the expansion of the central beach, which tripled the strip of sand and raised the “Brazilian Dubai” to the national level in tourism and real estate.
In three months, the Galileo Galilei dredger carried more than 2.2 million cubic meters of sand from the seabed and changed the landscape and history of Balneario Camboriu, Mayor Fabricio Oliveira (Podemos) explained.

“The filling sand was delivered to the beach in less than three months, but its impact has changed Balneario Camboriu and the attitude of the people and the country towards our city. We serve as an example for many other coastline extensions and protections throughout Brazil. The visibility given to the city by mega-structures has drawn the attention of the whole world to Balneario Camboriu,” emphasizes Oliveira.
Property appreciation has been one of the main sectors directly and positively impacted by the expansion work. A recent July 2022 FipeZap Index study found that out of the 50 cities analyzed, 45 saw real estate values rise above inflation, with an average increase of 5.97%.
Santa Catarina leads the ranking of the most expensive square meters and real estate prices above the national average, including in the capitals. While the national average was around 5%, Santa Catarina’s cities have grown by 19% in the past 12 months.

But Balneario Camboriu is even more impressive, with the city at the top of the rankings with an average price per square meter estimated at R$10,200, up 22.88% from last year, followed by “Brazilian Dubai”. Sao Paulo with 9.9 thousand reais m² and Rio de Janeiro with 9.7 thousand reais.
Conceived as a form of environmental protection, the expansion works aim to return the shore to the same conditions as in the past, and have successfully fulfilled this role.
“First of all, and this is very important, this work, designed to protect the coast, has proven its environmental effectiveness with the cyclone that recently passed through the coast of Santa Catarina. Without the expansion of Praia Central, episodes like this cyclone will cause the destruction of urban structures along the coast, as happened in other previous climate episodes,” the mayor stressed.
“The new Central Beach is an achievement for our city and our people. An achievement for all of us who greet it with joy and pride!” says Mayor Fabricio Oliveira.
Before and after
Just take a look at the photo from August 22, 2020 and another from December 2021, and you will understand that the transformation on the central beach of Balneario Camboriu is obvious. Mega work to expand the sandy strip has transformed the landscape of the Brazilian Dubai, or rather the Copacabana of Santa Catarina.
Ten images of the evolution of the work give an idea of what Balneario Camboriu has become. The giant work, worth 66.8 million reais, expected for many years, has allowed the central beach of Balneario Camboriu on the coast of Santa Catarina to acquire the same characteristics as in the 1960s.
