Anyone who needs to access the rowing clubs at the entrance to the island in Florianopolis knows how difficult it is to cross the road in front of them. For an accident to occur, it is a matter of a few seconds, and it has already happened. Now a new pedestrian crossing at the site promises more safety for the athletes.

Emmanuel Buchele is a professional rower and had an accident while trying to pass this place on his way from the Federal Institute to training in the Marine Park. “The car didn’t see me. Also, the light will not help, it can hit the driver in the face. And then there was a small accident. Luckily I managed to get out,” he said.

This has been the case for many years. To record the above report, the Balanço Geral Florianópolis team felt the difficulties firsthand. Either way, it’s a challenge to cross the road.

According to the president of the Council of Riachuelo, Antonio Farias Filho, “we have been suffering for some time now due to the lack of a footbridge, a pedestrian crossing and a traffic light here to guarantee our safety.”

Zena Becker, public-private partnership coordinator for the city of Florianopolis, explained that the placement of the traffic lane and traffic light is a short-term emergency measure.

“The project already includes a walkway, but this is a long-term project. Mayor Topazio, realizing how difficult it is for young people, children and even adults to get here [no Parque Náutico], decided to put a pedestrian crossing and a traffic light in a short time. We are already initiating public-private partnership talks with some partners to revitalize this whole area,” said Xena.

A traffic light should have a timer so that it only lights up when someone is about to pass. According to the coordinator, “The idea is to have a timer, because there are many hours in the park when there is no one. Thus, it does not justify the operation of a traffic light.”

The Catarinense Rowing Federation is looking forward to this initiative. According to the president of the institution, Andre Dutra, “The third stage of the state championship will be held on August 21, and the idea is that we already have this lane with a traffic light.”

At the second moment, the long-awaited pedestrian bridge will appear, part of the project to revitalize the Marine Park. “Sustainable Floripa, in partnership with Asbea (Brazilian Association of Architectural Firms), has carried out a project to revitalize this entire area, square, clubs, with the aim of making sport more and more valuable,” he clarified Zena.
