An Egyptian court plans to broadcast live on public television the execution of a man who stabbed a university student to death after refusing a marriage proposal.
According to Extra, 21-year-old Mohamed Adel killed Naira Ashraf after she denied his request, not far from the university where they studied.
The judge argues that the crime that shocked the country justifies not only the death penalty, but also a live broadcast, which has not been done in Egypt since 1998.
The man was sentenced to death on 6 July. According to the Daily Star, the attack on Naira was captured by a surveillance camera at Mansoura University.
The footage shows Mohamed punching the victim in the head as she gets off the bus. Then she falls and the aggressor stabs her classmate in the neck with a knife. He was overpowered by others, and the woman died on the spot.
The Egyptian Parliament has received a request from the court to broadcast the execution live on public television throughout the country. Thus, the court considers that this practice may prevent similar killings in the future.
“The transfer, even if it is only part of the beginning of the process, could achieve the purpose of deterrence, which was not achieved by the transfer of the sentence itself,” Mansura’s court said in a note.
