The father and stepmother of a 12-year-old girl were arrested on suspicion of raping a vulnerable woman in Barra Velha, on the north coast of Santa Catarina. About six months ago, the girl gave birth to a child.

The couple’s arrest took place on Wednesday (20) following an investigation by the Civil Police after the girl herself reported the crime to Creas (Specialized Inquiry Center for Social Assistance). The violence was committed when she was 9 years old.

According to police chief Procopio Batista Silveira Neto, the stepmother was having difficulty getting pregnant and would therefore like to take the child over. The couple even said that the girl became pregnant from a stranger, but a DNA test confirmed rape by her father.

“The public ministry has submitted a complaint which has already been accepted by the judiciary and they are responsible for the rape of a vulnerable person,” comments the delegate. The girl spent time in a shelter and is now in the care of family members in another city.
