The civil police requested the medical records of more than 20 women treated in various hospitals in Rio de Janeiro by doctor Giovanni Quintella Bezerra. An anesthetist was arrested for raping a patient who was undergoing a caesarean section.

According to delegate Barbara Lomba, in addition to working at the Hospital da Muler in São João de Meriti, in Baixada Fluminense, where the crime was filmed by nurses, Quintella provided services at the Hospital da Mahe, in Mesquite, and in the state Getúlio Vargas in Peña , north of the capital.

Following an initial complaint by hospital staff suspicious of Giovanni’s behavior, Deam (Women’s Office) began investigating five more cases of possible crimes committed by the anesthesiologist against other patients.

So far, the police have received word from three women treated by Giovanni. At least two said they took doping during the procedure. Agents are investigating whether the doctor used excessive or even unnecessary amounts of anesthesia to commit abuse.

Lomba also hopes to gather testimony from the victim who filmed the rape and her husband. According to police, the woman has already been discharged, and she knows about what happened.

“Excessive and unnecessary” sedation

MP Barbara Lomba said on Tuesday that the sedation the doctor applied to women in labor was “excessive and unnecessary.” In the delegate’s words, it was “very likely” that Quintella was over-sedating her patients in order to mock them.

“Sedation seemed unnecessary at the end of the procedure. The victim was neither nervous nor agitated. Everything indicates that this was done for the practice of rape,” he said.

Barbara investigates whether the sedatives were used for unnecessary purposes or in excessive doses that could harm the victims at other times. If this is discovered, Quintella will be prosecuted for other crimes. “Then we will evaluate what the type of offender will be,” the delegate said.

The delegate again stated that due to the method Quintella used to abuse women on the operating table, he could be classified as a serial offender. “By repeating criminal acts, we can tell, why not, that he is a serial offender,” he said.

Reassured patient did not know the child

She says that Dr. Giovanni Quintella Bezerra was the anesthesiologist for the operation. The young woman says she was so drugged that she was unable to attend the birth or meet the baby, who died a day later.

The woman filed a police complaint with Dean against the doctor. The family claims that the saleswoman came out of the delivery room with a white face and believe that Giovanni may have been semen. “I was pregnant with twins. My contractions started around 5:00 pm. There they told me that I was giving birth and would not leave again. Because the babies were premature, I was given medicine. At 11 pm the doctor saw that the child was being married. My first child was born normal and very peaceful. When the second child was due, they said that he could not be born in a normal delivery and that he would have to have a caesarean section. They said our lives were in danger,” the woman says, adding:

“I was taken to another room and the staff became desperate. For the time it took, they called anesthesia, this monster, so he could come and give me anesthesia. It was past one in the morning on the 6th, I was in pain, and they said the baby would not be born. He came, gave me RSK in the spine and medicine in the arm. Then I started to feel very sleepy. He’s always behind my head, with a rag, and they’re trying to find the baby. Nobody found the child. They cut me in every way.”

Prison

Giovanni was arrested on Sunday (10) after the police were called at the direction of the hospital da Mülcher, who had access to the video recorded by the staff.

On Tuesday, during a custody hearing, his arrest from the scene was converted to a preventive arrest and he was transferred to Bangu 8 Prison in west Rio, where other detainees could pursue him.
