Anesthetist Giovanni Quintella Bezerra, who was arrested for raping a sedated patient during a caesarean section, was met with shouting and swearing from other inmates at Bangu 8 prison in Complexo Hericino, in the western zone of Rio de Janeiro.
The perpetrator was brought to the scene after a remand hearing on Tuesday evening (12).
According to the Metropoles portal, when he arrived, the inmates of Bangu 8 Prison began shaking the bars, booing and scolding Giovanni, who was placed in a special and individual cell for security reasons.
In prisons, some crimes are not well received by other prisoners, requiring, for example, that the perpetrator remain in solitary confinement.
As the portal found out, the dawn in the prison was quiet. On Wednesday morning (13) Giovanni ate breakfast in the same way as the other detainees, and was never seen crying, all the while remaining silent in front of the criminal police.
Prison
Giovanni Quintella was arrested early last Monday morning (11) at the Müller Helonade Studart hospital in Baixada Fluminense do Río. He is accused of raping the vulnerable and has been documented sexually assaulting a sedated patient during childbirth.
At a custody hearing on Tuesday afternoon (12), Judge Rachel Assad issued a pre-trial detention order without a set time limit.
In the decision, the judge draws attention to the seriousness of the act committed by the doctor, who did not even take care of the presence of other specialists next to him in the operating room.
Rachel Asad highlights the cruelty and brutality of the action, showing the anesthesiologist’s “most complete contempt” for “the dignity of women, medical ethics and professional commitment”.
Police investigate possible other rapes
Barbara Lomba, head of the Women’s Office (Deam) of São João de Meriti, who is responsible for investigating the crimes committed by the anesthesiologist, said that Giovanni may have abused other patients in the hospital.
The police are investigating six cases of rape allegedly committed by Giovanni: three are from the 10th, including one that led to an arrest, and three more involve mothers who went to the police station after the consequences of the case.
According to police, the crimes occurred after childbirth, when doctors stitched the patients.
