An investigation that began two years ago in Barra Velha, on the north coast of Santa Catarina, received another chapter this week. The State Department convicted eight people for stealing basic food packages from the Secretariat of Social Assistance in exchange for votes. The crimes occurred during the 2020 municipal election campaign and involve secretaries, coordinators and employees.

According to the deputy, the then secretary of social assistance, two portfolio coordinators and a driver stole 1,830 basic baskets that were to be used in the secretary’s social programs and used as the subject of an exchange of votes for three adviser candidates.
According to the complaint of the electoral prosecutor of the 68th ISKCON polling station, the secretary, coordinators and the driver committed the crime of embezzlement and bribery in elections in a single and continuous manner. Three advisers practiced the crime of election corruption in the criminal succession.
Now the document will be considered by the court, which will determine the acceptance or rejection of the complaint of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The investigation by the city’s Civil Police was completed in May of this year.
