Two environmentalists were attacked last Tuesday (6/28) in Guaramirim, north of Santa Catarina, South Carolina. Shots hit the garage door, as well as the glass of the front door of the house where environmentalists live in RPPN Santuário Rã-bugio. It was about 19:30 on Guilherme Tomelin Street, Caixa d’Agua area.
A motorcyclist with a short-barreled 12-gauge gun stopped on the road and fired three shots towards the house. The first shot hit the RPNN sign (private natural reserve), the other two hit the house, which is located about 25 meters from the road.
According to the report to the military police, one shot punched a 3-centimeter hole in the wall, and another shot through the shutters of the garage, ricocheted off the inner wall, smashed the window of the inner door, hitting a spot on the table, at which one of the environmentalists usually sits, working at the computer.
“Fortunately, my wife (who is also an environmentalist) was on the top floor of the house and was not hurt, but so far she was in a panic and very traumatized. When he hears the noise of an approaching motorcycle, he runs for cover, and the deafening sound of the shots does not leave his head, ”says the environmentalist, who was not at home that day, he traveled to Itaiopolis.
The couple is very frightened by the attack. The two are volunteers and have created several RPPNs in Itaiópolis and Guaramirim that are fighting for biodiversity conservation.
After the shooting, the motorcyclist fled the scene. The military police searched the area but did not find the author. In the home that was attacked, police found two cases of shotgun shells and shell fragments.
