Almost a year after he was found guilty of sex crimes, 55-year-old R&B singer R. Kelly, who wrote the hit “I Believe I Can Fly”, will be sentenced by Brooklyn prosecutors this Wednesday (29) in New York. , United States.
The US Attorney’s Office has asked a Brooklyn court judge to sentence the artist to 25 years in prison for involving women and teenagers in sex. The prosecutor’s office claims that the singer “represents a serious public danger”, and he faces a life sentence.
The defense of R. Kelly, who is currently in prison, requested that the sentence should not exceed 17 years. In September, a jury in New York found him guilty on 11 counts, including racketeering. The singer still has pending lawsuits in two other US states.
“His actions were brazen, manipulative, controlling and coercive. He showed no remorse or respect for the law,” the prosecution asserts in a document in which it assures that “a long prison term will prevent others rich, famous and in excess of power from committing crimes of this kind.”
Starting Aug. 15, another trial is due to begin at the Chicago Courthouse, where Kelly and two other employees are accused of manipulating a 2008 lawsuit on allegations of pornography and child abuse.
