Two patients in serious condition died in a fire at the Santa Casa de Belo Horizonte hospital in the state of Minas Gerais. The fire started around 8 pm on Monday (27), and dozens of hospitalized people were transferred from the medical center.

According to the Military Fire Department, the fire started due to equipment malfunction that led to an oxygen leak on the 10th floor, where the intensive care unit is located.

According to the O Tempo newspaper, more than 30 patients were transferred to other health posts in the city because of medical workers who came to inhale smoke while working. This Tuesday (28) 25 employees are hospitalized, two of them in CTI (Intensive Care Center).

A statement from Santa Casa de Belo Horizonte said 931 patients were hospitalized during the fire and that all those on the 9th and 10th floors were removed. Check it out in full:

“Regarding the fire that occurred in Wing C on the 10th floor of Santa Casa BH, the facility reports that patients have been relocated and referred to the aid authority for evaluation. The area where the fire occurred has been closed by the fire department and civil defense, while the remaining areas have returned to their normal operations.

At the time of the fire, 931 patients were in hospitals. Those on the 10th and 9th floors have been removed but are now returning and receiving proper care. Two deaths of patients who had a serious clinical condition were recorded. The bodies are being sent to the Medical School of Law (IML).

Santa Casa BH thanks the Minas Gerais Military Police, Military Fire Department, Civil Defense and Mobile Emergency Services for their work. It also emphasizes the work and desire of the staff of the institution and the members of the team.”
