Pepe Bornoyartist, poet, printer and graphic designer from Malaga, died in Malaga at the age of 81.

His full name was José Manuel Cuenca Mendoza and he was born on October 6, 1942 in the El Palo district of Malaga. Since 1960, he was involved in theater, music and photography, activities that in 1964 he replaced with painting, poetry, book publishing and journalistic articles, activities that occupied his entire life.

Thus, he won important awards, including the National Silver Medal in 1966, the National Gold Medal and Medal of the City of Barcelona in 1968, the National Gold Medal and the First Prize for Abstract Art in 1969, the Critics’ Prize for the Best Artistic Ensemble. in the 1971-1972 season, first prize at the II International Art Biennale in 1974, International Prize for Contemporary Engraving in 1979.

He has also exhibited in the most representative cities of art in Spain, such as Madrid, Barcelona, ​​Valencia, Alicante, Burgos and Valladolid; in Andalusian capitals such as Malaga, Seville, Granada, Cordoba and Almeria, as well as in European cities such as Paris, Lisbon, Stockholm, Rome, Dresden and Venice, to New York and Beirut.

From 1980 to 1984, he co-created and directed Jarazmin Magazine with José Infante. In 1997 he was appointed academician of the Senate of the International Academy of Contemporary Art in Rome. From 1997 to 1999 he directed the collection of poems by Ibn Gabirol of the Cultural Center of Generation 27 of the Provincial Council of Malaga.

In 2001, he was appointed academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Telmo and first vice-president, from where he directed the institution’s yearbook. In addition, he published thirteen collections of poetry and also wrote poetry and articles in magazines and newspapers.

In 2006 he created the poster “Fair in Malaga”, and in 2009 he illustrated and edited the “Dictionary of the Painters, Sculptors and Engravers of 19th Century Malaga”. XX’ for the Royal Academy of Arts of San Telmo.

On the other hand, since 2005, a street in the Huelin district of the capital Malaga has been named after him, and in the same year 2023, he was awarded the Medal of the City of Malaga in recognition of his artistic career and was named Favorite Son. .
