Italy under rule Georgia Meloni allies with Cyprus, Malta and Greece against NGOs save lives at sea. On the other hand, against, France, Germany and Spain. Assess the situation yourself. Ask yourself serenely how this scheme protects us and is convenient for us. It took only a few weeks to expose the bluff of an inexperienced, sloppy and overly ideological government.
How else to judge the front with Paris? Someone will object, and not without reason: Europe talks about solidarity, and then leaves us alone with the landings. Already. But geography, unfortunately, is not an opinion: with eight thousand kilometers of coastline and a boot stretching majestically towards North Africa, where you think that ships full of desperate people land on the shore in escape war and drought? So, let’s remember which international treaty, signed by us and never seriously tried to change, obliges us to welcome: it is called Dublin Agreement and states that the country of first landing is welcome. And the port of first disembarkation, in case of rescue, is the closest and safest. So, if geography and the Dublin Treaty call us first, what can we do?
Certainly not something that the Meloni government did improvidently: play tug-of-war with those who are bigger than us, that is, with France and all of Europe (except for the small and not very influential countries mentioned at the beginning). The fact that the French play dirty with migrants is a long history: for example, the illegal removal of unaccompanied minors at the Ventimiglia border is often documented. But the data speaks for itself: it has taken in more than us over the years.
So you need to get smarter. The rules are changed by diplomacy and exchange, not by a game of who shouts louder. Because the balance now is the isolation of Italy and the resetting of resettlements that our country was counting on. If the government continues to crack down on non-governmental organizations, which account for only 10 percent of migrant landings, the government will collapse. Regular immigration flows need to be resumed. Confindustria complained for years about a shortage of labor, INPS about a lack of contributions to future pensions. Today, it is almost impossible to legally immigrate to Italy: making it possible is the first response to human traffickers and the only way to avoid massacres at sea. Regular entry, integration, expulsion of those who entered secretly. It is an orderly and necessary system. But in order to organize it, it is necessary to get out of ideological fury and consensus. A difficult undertaking for this violated and sovereign right.
