Good news with COP27. Among the most anticipated guests of the UN Climate Summit was undoubtedly newly elected President of Brazil Lula, who during his speech did not deceive the expectations of activists and observers. Weeks after defeating outgoing Jair Bolsonaro, former trade unionist Lula da Silva, now in his third term, vowed that put an end to the destruction of the Amazonwanted and promoted by his predecessor in order to increase cultivated areas at the expense of local ecosystems.
“Brazil is back,” the president began, promising to stop environmental destruction and be ready to work towards “zero deforestation” of the Amazon rainforest. Welcoming the demonstrations of jubilation by local communities who, in recent years, have denounced the fires and the destruction of their habitat, Lula said in his speech that Brazil does not need to clear another hectare of rainforest to become a major agricultural producer.and who will use their presidency to demand that rich countries deliver on their pledge to provide $100 billion in climate finance to developing countries, as promised at COP15 in Copenhagen, through the creation of a climate finance and environmental disaster damage fund.
“Today I am here to say that Brazil is once again ready to join the effort for a healthier planet.. Brazil has just completed one of the most decisive elections in its history. Other countries followed in unprecedented ways. This could help curb the rise of authoritarian right-wingers and climate deniers around the world,” explains Lula, who offers himself as a defender of democracy against extremist tendencies while at the same time reaffirming his commitment to the environmental crisis.”Nobody’s safe he notes. In the United States, they live with increasingly intense tropical storms and hurricanes… In Brazil, which is a forestry and hydrological powerhouse, we have experienced devastating droughts and floods. Europe faces extreme heatwaves with fires and unprecedented deaths. And although it is the continent with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions, Africa has experienced droughts in Chad, Kenya and Somalia. I repeat: no one is safe.” That is why, in the coming months, Brazil will develop cooperation with other Amazon countries, including Peru, Colombia, Guyana and Venezuela, in order to sustainably develop the region and conserve flora and fauna.
“Without a secure Amazon, there is no planetary security. We will do everything possible to zero deforestation and the degradation of our biomes. For this reason, I would like to announce that efforts to combat climate change will have the highest priority in my next government. “We will prioritize the fight against deforestation of all our biomes, and we will reverse the damage done in recent years by the previous government,” promises the President of Brazil, who during his mandate will use the opinions of environmentalists and scientists such as Carlos Nobre, whose research warn of conditions in the Amazon that are approaching the point of no return. Among the new partnerships announced will be Brazil’s partnership with Indonesia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.. Together, these three countries are home to three of the largest rainforests in the world: working together to conserve them will be one of the next goals of President Lula’s green agenda.
