We needed an answer to what’s going on in the US, because now we can’t help but ask ourselves, “Could it happen here too?” Path right to abortion he was appalled by a US Supreme Court ruling that makes us think our body’s freedom to make decisions is constantly in jeopardy. In a sense, this is true, given the position of the conservatives in many European countries (see the law passed in Poland), as well as in Italy. Now, however, the EU wants to do its part by including abortion in the Charter of Fundamental Rights.
Yesterday at the plenary session Parliament condemned the recent decision of the US Supreme Court focusing on “declining sexual and reproductive health and rights”. Parliamentarians expressed solidarity with American women and concern about the increased flow of money to fund anti-gender and anti-choice groups around the world. As he points out Visionaccording to the Forum on Reproductive Rights, between 2008 and 2019 this amount would exceed US$700 million, Russian Federation and Europe.
The EU Parliament called on the Union countries to decriminalize abortion and to remove and combat the legal, financial, social and practical restrictions that still exist in some Member States. The Union also expressed the desire toensure access to safe, legal and free abortion services, to antenatal and maternal health services, voluntary family planning, services suitable for young people, and HIV prevention, treatment and support without discrimination of any kind.”
For this, it was decided propose the inclusion of the right to abortion in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. MEPs argue that the Council should amend Article 7 of the Charter establishing that “everyone has the right to a safe and legal abortion” and are waiting for the European Council to meet to convene a Convention to revise the treaties. The proposal was approved by 324 votes to 115, with 38 abstentions, and could begin a complex process of revision of the Bylaws. Even though it is not currently binding, it is still a first step and a warning signal calling for continued attention and “increased political support for human rights defenders and caregivers who work to advance sexual and reproductive health and related rights.”
