In Uvalde, Texas, 19 children and 2 teachers have just died after an 18-year-old entered an elementary school and opened fire. In Texas, and indeed in the United States, getting a gun is so easy that even an 18-year-old boy can do it without much difficulty, with dramatic consequences. According to the Archive of Gun Violence, since the beginning of the year there have been 212 mass shootings of various kinds in the country, and yet, despite this, the gun lobby is so powerful that the introduction of regulations seems impossible. The truth is that Texas has more restrictions on possession of sex toys than lethal weaponsSeriously.

While research tells us that shooting has become the leading cause of death for American children since 2020, not only is Texas not imposing any restrictions, but it has made it easier to buy guns. According to texas Tribune, Last year, the state passed a law allowing anyone aged 21 or older to carry a gun in public without a permit or training. Only those with a criminal record are excluded. So guns don’t seem like a problem, but sex toys do, they really do. As absurd as it may seem, Texas has a law that says a person cannot own more than 6 sex toys are understood as objects “designed or marketed as being useful primarily for the stimulation of the human sexual organs”. They are considered “obscene devices” under the Texas Penal Code and “Whoever possesses six or more identical or similar obscene devices or obscene items is presumed to be in possession of them with the intent to advertise them.” In the meantime, however, there are no state regulations limiting the number of weapons a person can legally own, nor are there federal laws that set limits.

Sex toys are a law passed in the 1970s and almost a decade ago a federal appeals court declared unconstitutional (violating the right to privacy). Despite this, Texas never repealed it and even used it as recently as 2004 against women who promoted the use of sex toys for female pleasure.. Senator Ted Cruz also proudly defended this rule when he was the state’s attorney general.: he even submitted a 76-page memoir comparing sex toy ownership to “hiring a voluntary prostitute”, arguing that there is no “right to stimulate one’s genitals for non-medical purposes not related to childbearing or outside of interpersonal relationships.” But what about the right to life? About the right of children to go to school without risking death? Maybe it’s time to rethink some #EnoughIsEnough priorities.
