Coxabengoa was Best Water Positive + Company awardrecognition granted International Desalination Association (IDA)during the celebration of the Water and Climate Change Summit, one of the most important events in the water and desalination sector, and for this edition dedicated to its 50th anniversary, the city of Seville, headquarters of the multinational company Coxabengoa specialized in desalination, was chosen.

Reward acknowledges the company’s history in the desalination sector, which has been in existence for over four decades, with thirty desalination plants worldwide with references in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and America, with a production capacity of more than four million m3/day, which is sufficient to meet the needs more than 25 million people worldwide.

Projects like these Tawila in Abu Dhabi (Global Water Award 2023 for the largest desalination plant in the world), Rabigh 3 in Saudi Arabia (Global Water Award 2022 for the most efficient and Guinness World Records™ for the largest reverse osmosis technology of its year), Salalah in Oman (MEED Awards 2021 for water project of the year), Jubail3A in Saudi Arabia (combined with a 45 MW solar PV site) or Agadir in Morocco (which supplies 275,000 m3/day of drinking water for the population and for irrigation) are good proof of this.

During the summit, Coxabengoa took part in three panel discussions on decarbonization, the positive impact of water, and the impact of design on large desalination plants. Thus, Angel Alday, vice president of Abengoa Water, explained the need and real opportunity decarbonize the water sector. “Governments and regulators must create a market ecosystem to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon water industry,” Alday said, emphasizing the need to “… create a more sustainable and sustainable water sector, which must necessarily start with technological innovation. and the integration of renewable energy sources into this process.”

Likewise, Rafael Morales, Coxabengoa Water’s Business Development Director for Europe, Africa and the Americas, highlighted Coxabengoa’s understanding of the project. “Coxabengoa impacts the communities in which it operates its projects through corporate social responsibility activities, promoting the education of children and the elderly, providing digital media or meeting basic infrastructure needs,” he explained. “Passing Coxabengoa through a community is always intended to leave behind more value than the benefit of the plant itself. Moreover, our commitment is to help improve social statusMorales added.

Finally, Miguel Ramon Muro, Technology and Process Specialist at Coxabengoa, reviewed the factors that can affect the remineralization process of a desalination plant and shared the solutions that Coxabengoa applies in its design to minimize unwanted effects and thus achieve maximum efficiency.
