The footage gained attention while recording the passage of a meteor at Monte Castelo, north of Santa Catarina. The image was recorded at 4:52 am on Friday (12). The scene was posted on the “Meteoros Monte Castelo” Instagram page.
“This video offers not only a real-time view of this celestial wonder, but also stunning slow-motion footage that reveals the meteor’s magnificence in its entirety,” the post’s description reads.
A meteor is a luminous phenomenon that occurs as a result of fragments of a celestial body falling into the atmosphere. The friction of this material at high speed with the gases in the atmosphere causes it to become hot and leave a luminous trail in the sky.
For this reason, it is also called a shooting star. Most meteors disintegrate before reaching the Earth’s surface. Those that manage to reach the earth are called meteorites.

VIDEO: meteor shower at dawn in Chapeco
The meteor shower was observed at dawn in April in Chapeco in the west of Santa Catarina. The celestial event occurs each year between April 15th and 29th, with peak activity between the 22nd and 23rd. Professor Carlos Rutz of the Baum Pastor School of Basic Education has documented this phenomenon.
“A meteor shower occurs when the planet Earth crosses the path of a comet. At this very moment, the Earth is crossing the dirt (debris, dust) of comet ‘C/1861 Thatcher’,” explained Professor Carlos Rutz.
Rutz said that this year the rain comes from the constellation Lyra, hence the name Lyrids, which also translates into Portuguese as “Lyriadas”. The meteors that we see have an incredible speed of 46.8 km / s, that is, 168,500 km / h.
Meteors are visible at the moment of their “burning”, when this happens, celestial bodies are at an altitude of 120 to 85 km, already in the Earth’s atmosphere. No instruments are required to observe the phenomenon.
“Meteors are visible to the naked eye, and the current dim lunar phase makes the observation even better. Observers are advised to stay away from the visual pollution of big cities,” the professor explained.
