Pope Francis has defended United Nations reform that has “showed its limits” in the face of the pandemic and war in Ukraine, according to extracts from the pontiff’s new book published this Sunday by Italian newspaper La Stampa. (16).
Titled “I beg you in the name of God. Ten Prayers for Hope for the Future”, the book will be published next Tuesday (18) in Italy.
“When we talk about peace and security on a global level, the first organization we think of is the UN and in particular its Security Council,” says the Argentine in his new book.
“The war in Ukraine has once again highlighted the need for the current multilateral structure to find more flexible and effective ways to resolve conflicts,” Francisco assesses.
“In times of war, it is important to reaffirm that we need more multilateralism and better multilateralism,” adds the Pope.
“Today’s world is not the same as it was immediately after World War II, and international institutions should be “the result of the greatest possible consensus,” he argues.
“The need for these reforms has become even more evident since the pandemic, when the current multilateral system has shown all its limits. With the spread of vaccines, we had a clear example that sometimes the law of the strongest weighs more than solidarity, ”Francisco regrets.
Therefore, he calls for “organic reforms so that international organizations can restore their original calling to serve the human race.”
The Supreme Pontiff also presented himself as the defender of “integral security”, which consists in guaranteeing all rights (economic, social, food, medical) and should be the compass that guides the decisions of international organizations.
