If only Itajaí and Balneario Camboriu, towns on the north coast of Santa Catarina, had been counted in the elections, Jair Bolsonaro (PL) would have won the presidential election by hand. In Itajai alone, the candidate for re-election received 87,882 votes, i.e. 66.43%, which is more than enough to win in the first round. Data taken from TSE (Superior Electoral Court).

In Balneario Camboriu, the number was even higher: Bolsonaro was chosen by 55,235 voters, i.e. 68.36% of the vote. For a candidate to win in the first round, 50% of the votes plus 1 would be required.
The two cities received 220,059 votes for all candidates. Itajaí has a population of 137,130 and Balneario Camboriu has a population of 82,929.

The scenario in Brazil is different
Despite the local numbers, the script in Brazil has the majority for Lula (Portugal). The ex-president received 57,258,115 votes, i.e. 48.43%, against 51,071,277 votes, 43.20% of the electorate.
According to analysts interviewed by AFP (Agenzia France Press), Lula’s lead of just five points creates an uncertain scenario and predicts weeks of intense and aggressive campaigning in a deeply divided country.
The main polls showed a comfortable rise for the PT candidate with a lead of up to 14 points, giving Lula the opportunity to win in the first round.
Sunday’s numbers were in line with the “optimistic” scenario advocated by Bolsonaro’s 67-year-old campaign team, leaving him a chance for re-election.
“Open End”
“The ending is open and the situation is balanced. Bolsonaro will have stronger support than Lula in important states,” commented Leandro Consentino, a political scientist at the Insper Institute.
