Don’t tell Brenda from Bristol, but despite her government’s growing unpopularity, speculation is growing in Westminster that Boris Johnson could call a snap election in the autumn.

The theory is that rather than face an upcoming investigation by the Privileges Commission into whether he deliberately misled parliament about the party, the prime minister will go to the country to seek new mandates from voters.

Adding to the excitement, the prime minister did not appear to rule out the prospect of early elections when repeatedly asked by journalists accompanying the NATO summit in Madrid.

“I’m focused on overcoming cost-of-living pressures and making plans for development and improvement, deepening and a stronger economy, so if you really want to know the truth, the idea is in my head. I’m going to show leadership on some of the toughest global problems facing the world.

Political observers (and Conservative MPs) are taking his comments with a grain of salt, given the prime minister’s well-tried record in terms of telling the truth.

Interestingly, fringe Conservatives have also been told to present their plans for the upcoming election today.

Some Conservatives see it as further evidence that the prime minister is preparing to call an election, perhaps in September.

Unsurprisingly, Conservative MPs, especially those from the fringe districts, are not enthusiastic about the prospects for the upcoming election.

They point to their party’s dismal by-election results in Wakefield, Tiverton and Honiton last week as evidence that Johnson’s days of winning votes are over.

“Just like the scene in Blackadder Goes Fourth, we sent in stairs that he never ordered,” said a member of parliament. “Boris seems to want us to go up and slowly approach to the sound of machine gun fire to give the enemy a sporting opportunity.”

Less than a month after Johnson survived a vote of no confidence in his leadership, 41 percent of his lawmakers tried to unseat him.

Tory’s current rules prevent her from trying for another year, but some of her opponents are already planning to change them.

As one MP told Britain: “Of course, politically speaking, we should be heartbroken if he tried to call an election.”

But others are less concerned, and even Johnson believes he is not reckless enough to enter the country when his party is trailing in the polls.

The former minister suspects that Johnson’s deputy chief of staff, David Canzini, is behind the election rumors to strengthen his position as chief of staff.

Another MP agreed: “I think they just say it so people will obey.”

A senior Conservative source also sought to allay MPs’ fears, telling Britain: “If I wanted an election in the autumn, I would have asked lawmakers years ago to come up with a plan.”

But the Westminster rumor mill will continue until Johnson finally lets him out, and the nerves of Conservative MPs are uncertain.
