The race to replace Boris Johnson heated up tonight as Liz Truss openly attacked Rishi Snak for his personal education.
The Foreign Minister came forward tonight, accusing him of leading the country into recession at one point.
Meanwhile, the former prime minister accused him of being “no good” in an economy he described as “socialist”.
During Sunday night’s ITV leadership debate, all five candidates had the opportunity to question one of their rivals.
The race to become Britain’s next prime minister is heating up, with heated public debates.
Sunak asked Truss. “Liz, in your past you were a liberal democrat and holdover.
“Which one do you regret the most?”
Trus replied: “I was not born a conservative.
“I went to school in Paisley and Leeds.
“But my basic belief, and the reason I am conservative, is that I have seen children at my school disappointed in Leeds. I saw that you did not get what you could have at your school, Rishi.
“I saw them waste their potential and I thought that waste was wrong.”
Snack was educated at the prestigious Winchester College, where he received a partial scholarship.
The discussion was dominated by a showdown between two conservative bigwigs, in which Truss attacked The Snacks over the tax increases.
Truss claimed that Britain was in a recession due to rising taxes on snack foods.
“It slows down growth,” he said. “It discourages companies from investing and takes money out of people’s pockets. This is no way to stimulate the economy during a recession.”
But Snak accused Trump of selling the economy “for free” after he said he was slowing growth by raising taxes, the highest in 70 years.
Truss told him: It will prevent us from getting the income we need to pay off our debts. “
Snack said the pandemic had hit the economy and finances needed to be restored.
“I want to stand here and say, ‘Look, we’re going to reduce this tax and that tax and other taxes. Everything will be fine.’ But what do you know? No,” he said.
“These things come with a price, higher inflation, higher mortgage rates, less savings. And you know what? This is not conservative economics, this is socialism.”
Truss also contradicted Snak on whether he still believed Britain should do more business with China.
Mr Snack said: “In fact, I helped craft a vision for the Consolidated Review, a plan where you and I sit around a cabinet table and emphasize that China is a huge threat to our national security. It’s our lens.” We have to see it.”
Conservative lawmakers hope to narrow the search for Johnson’s successor, to be announced on September 5, to two possibilities in the future.
A third round of voting will take place on Monday with the goal of the final two candidates arriving on Thursday before the summer break.
The latter two go to mail-in ballots for party members.
