The visit of President of the Republic Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to Balneario Camboriu last Saturday (25) was marked by the presence of supporters, politicians and security officials who gathered to accompany the March for Jesus. The event was held on the sandy strip of the new urban area Praia Central.

But one scene caught the attention of those who were there. The commander of the 12th Balneario Camboriu Military Police Battalion, Daniel Nunez, greeted the president and handed him a hitherto secret item for those at the scene. Bolsonaro got it and kept it in his pocket.
The item is a “Challenge Coins” – in Portuguese “Challenge Coins” – a coin that, according to the Military Police, symbolizes respect and recognition. “Challenge coins” have their origins in the North American tradition.

In 2011, US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates visited military bases in Afghanistan shortly before his retirement. During the visit, he shook hands with dozens of men and women in the military. However, what appeared to be a simple handshake gesture was the delivery of a special coin, and no one noticed. Delivery of “Challenge Coin” was used as a thank you for the services rendered.
