Scottish Conservative leader makes a second u-turn to vote against Boris Johnson

Scottish Conservative leaders said they supported moves to oust Boris Johnson as prime minister.

Doug Ross said he supported the Prime Minister’s no-confidence resolution.

His decision made a rare double change before saying he should stay for the Ukraine war after he first asked Johnson to give up the private party in Downing Street.

This made MP Murray the subject of widespread ridicule by his political opponents.

However, in a statement posted on Twitter after Johnson appeared before the Committee of Tory Supporters in 1922, Ross said that he had now decided to step down as prime minister.

He states: “The war in Europe continues and the British government strongly supports President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people, but the timing of this vote is far from ideal.

“But I wasn’t trying to get this ballot right now, but it’s still happening tonight and I need to consider how to get the ballot on behalf of my members and the country.

“I do this because I know there are opinions expressed on both sides of this debate. This is the debate that has dominated political debate for months.

“The prime minister can be proud of the many successes his government has achieved, especially the vaccination and vacation system.

“But I heard loud and clear the anger at the breach of the rules we all follow by Covid, especially the Prime Minister’s statement in Congress on this issue.

“After listening carefully to the people of Murray who were re-elected as representatives and to many people across Scotland, now that this vote of confidence has taken place, I can no longer support Boris Johnson in good faith.

“My vote today will support a motion of no confidence.

Ross’s decision will lead him to oppose the Scottish Secretary of State and ally of the Prime Minister, Alister Jack.

He states: “The prime minister has won my full support and vote for him tonight. When we face major challenges at home and abroad, he shows tremendous leadership.”

Following the split of Scotland’s Tory, Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk MPs, John Lamont resigned as Under Secretary of State Liz Truss and voted for Prime Minister.

For his part, David Mundell, Alister Jack’s predecessor as Scottish secretary, confirmed that he also supported the no-confidence resolution.

Former Conservative Vice President Andrew Bowie, lawmakers from West Aberdeenshire and Kincardin also voted for the prime minister.

He states: “Tonight I made a very difficult decision to vote for the prime minister with all my heart. I did not make a decision lightly, but after listening to my members.”
