Have you ever wondered how zoos prepare to care for their animals during the summer? You may not realize it, but just like people, pets also suffer from high temperatures and need careful care.
With this in mind, every year the Bioparque Zoo Pomerode team prepares for the summer season, offering the animals the best during this time. Activities occur whenever the heat increases and are more frequent from November onwards.
The zoo has fans, air conditioning, as well as hose baths, ice cream, and everything else already included in the enclosure, such as tanks, waterfalls, and sun shelter. It also has a sprinkler system that activates automatically when the temperature reaches 28 degrees, aimed at both the enclosures and the refreshment of walkways for visitors.
The importance of environmental enrichment
Pomerode Zoo uses environmental enrichment to care for the animals that live there. This approach is widely used in zoos and aquariums, for example, to ensure the well-being and quality of life of animals under human care.
This practice involves creating environments and activities that encourage natural behavior, physical activity, cognitive challenges, and the expression of species-typical behavior. The goal of environmental enrichment is to create a richer environment that, as far as possible, imitates the natural environment of animals so that they can express their natural abilities.
According to the biopark team, one adaptation to enrich the environment at high temperatures is ice cream, which can be made from frozen or crushed fruits, natural fruit juice, and there are also options for carnivores made from ground meat, blood and even fish.
Professionals explain that enrichments add dynamism to the daily routine and are part of the zoo’s animal welfare program. They vary depending on the characteristics of each species.
So the Zoo Pomerode team evaluates what time of day a species is most active, what its habits are and its diet, among other things. Enrichments can be characterized as dietary, sensory, environmental, social and cognitive, and may have more than one dimension.
Visitors can even follow these events when weather permits. Each animal in the park receives environmental enrichment approximately twice a week. On weekends, the zoo announces entertainment events, especially themed ones, on its social networks.
So for those who want to learn even more about the animals and watch these activities during a tour, just follow the Pomerode Zoo Instagram and plan your visit.
