The arrival of summer is a time that the residents of Santa Catarina look forward to. However, the heat and humidity are raising awareness of the growing risk of possible accidents involving venomous animals in Santa Catarina.
High temperatures and humidity create ideal conditions for the breeding and activity of these animals, increasing the number of their appearances at this time of year.
The UFSC sustainability profile – @ufscsustentavel – published 17 species of poisonous animals that should be kept away this summer. Remember that knowledge of the animals present in the region is a form of prevention and allows assistance to be provided more quickly in the event of unwanted encounters.
Types of poisonous animals in Santa Catarina:
- Brown spider (Loxosceles spp.): Known for its dangerous bites, this spider lives in dark and damp places such as cracks and holes;
- Armadairan spider (Phoneutria spp.): This large spider is known for its aggressiveness and strong venom. It is usually found in urban areas.
- Yellow Scorpio (Tityus serrulatus): Found in urban environments, this scorpion is yellowish in color and can cause serious accidents;
- spotted scorpion (Titys costatus): another scorpion species that requires attention, especially in rural areas;
- black scorpion or brown scorpion (Tityus bahiensis): this species is common in tropical regions and can cause serious poisoning.
- Fire caterpillar (Megalopyge lanata): although innocuous in appearance, its bristles secrete toxic substances that cause severe pain;
- dog caterpillar (Padalia spp.): when you touch the bristles, there is a poisonous gland that causes a burning and tingling sensation;
- Tank tracks (Acharia spp): They can hide under their spiny armor or adopt poses that make their appearance tank-like, deterring predators;
- Tatura-Oskaya (Lonomia obliqua): This caterpillar has stinging hairs that can cause severe reactions;
- Green turtle (Automeris spp.): In the larval stage, trichogenic cells are present that cause burns on contact with the skin;
- hairy beetle (Hylesia spp.): on their body they have bristles with stinging substances that can burn if they come into contact with human skin;
- Tatura-Oskaya (Lonomia obliqua): This caterpillar has stinging hairs that can cause severe reactions;
- Family Arctiidae: – a family of insects of the order Lepidoptera. It has about 8 thousand species worldwide, some of which produce toxic substances;
- Spider caterpillar (Phetron spp.): Its bristles are found in vegetation and can cause irritation.
Snakes:
- tree pit viper (Botrops jararaka)
- Hararakusu (Botrops zhararacussu)
- Rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus)
- Coral snakes (Micrurus spp.)
All of these snakes are poisonous and pose a potential danger.

Keep Pets Away: Protect your pets by moving them away from the danger zone.
Save the children: Keep children away from the animal and the meeting place.
