This Friday morning, a porpoise was found dead and already in a decomposed state on the central beach of Balneario Camboriu, on the northern coast of Santa Catarina (24). Scientific name Pontoporia Blainvilleathe small animal resembles dolphins.
Porpoises regularly seen dead on beaches, biologist says
According to Andre Barreto, professor and marine biologist at the University of Vale do Itajaí, “unfortunately, this is a species that we regularly see dead on the beaches.”
Since the animal was already in a state of decomposition, Andre notes that it is impossible to determine the cause of death. “Even if we did an autopsy, we could not guarantee that we would be able to identify him.”
Regarding the difference between porpoises and dolphins, he explained that, in general, both are “dolphins.” The big difference is which family each one belongs to: dolphins Dolphinids and porpoises Pontoporidae. Watch it in the video:
