Pena, on the north coast of Santa Catarina, announced last Tuesday (17) that it had eliminated the waiting list for free pet neutering in the city. The information was transmitted through IMAP (Peña Environmental Institute).
The neutering project will serve more than 1 thousand animals in Pena in 2023.
According to the IMAP Animal Welfare Program, more than 1.03 thousand castrations were performed in 2023. Date of operation.
It took several castration efforts and a task force of the entire IMAP team to clear the queue, comments the head of the institute, Everaldo Lurival Francisco.
“Together we carried out 300 castrations a month. Neutering is an effective alternative to population control for dogs and cats, especially strays,” explains Everaldo.
He asked residents to report to the agency if they know of stray dogs, even if they are men or women, so that IMAP can help and sterilize the animals.
In addition to castration, the service already includes a microchip – a tiny device that is placed under the skin of the animal. The microchip contains all the data that allows you to identify the owner and address of the pet.
“This is a very cool alternative, especially in cases of disappearances. It is as if it were the CPF of a small animal, guaranteeing greater security to the owners,” concludes the superintendent.

In addition to castration, the municipality also provides assistance in an accredited clinic and rescue service, as well as veterinary care for domestic, livestock and wild animals, as well as victims of abuse or accidents.
In addition, large animals that have been released onto public roads or that have been abused are also collected and supported in Peña. Veterinary care is provided in the accredited Vida Pets clinic, divided into two forms:
- Animals with low-income owners – for serious cases requiring urgent assistance. 10 free consultations per month with everything necessary (consultation, surgery and medications);
- Street Animals – There is no service limit, just log in via IMAP and authorization will be granted based on the urgency of the case.
Rescue and Abuse Review Services are provided by GOR (Group Operations Rescue), a company hired by the director, which operates every day from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, except national holidays.
To submit a report, you can come in person to IMAP, at the address: Rua Duque de Caxias, 54, Centro de Penha. Additionally, GOR can be activated by calling (47) 9 99651-9961 or WhatsApp (47) 99969-8580.
