One of the most notable observations is Guirigo’s preference for places with natural Cerrado vegetation. This conscious choice of habitat demonstrates the importance of conserving these unique ecosystems.
The Cerrado is one of the most vulnerable regions in Brazil due to deforestation to expand agriculture, and maintaining interconnected natural areas is essential for animals like the guirigo to move, disperse and maintain the genetic health of their population.
The confident behavior of the guirigo during observation is also an indicator of the positive impact of protected areas such as the Grande Sertan Veredas National Park, which provide a safe haven for wildlife.
Another fundamental aspect of monitoring is the diet of the guirigo, which consists mainly of wild prey with an emphasis on the giant anteater.
