A slug known as the “blue dragon” carrying a deadly venom has been found on a beach in Thailand. This event led the authorities to warn bathers because of the danger posed by the animal.
In February 2020, a slug was spotted on Praia Grande, in Peña, on the north coast of Santa Catarina.
‘poisonous dragon’
Tiny but deadly, in addition to poison, the blue dragon has a very bright color and a violent appearance that can easily attract the inconspicuous. Its size ranges from 2 to 4 cm.
Several posts showing sea clams inside jars and pots were posted on Facebook, went viral and increased the fear of swimmers.
According to marine scientist Ton Tamromgnawasavat, a professor at Kasetsart University, the sea slug belongs to the species Glaucus atlanticus, lives in the middle layers of sea water and is often found in the oceans.
However, the presence of these animals on the beaches is rare. As for the poison, the scientist cautioned that the ideal is to wash the affected area with vinegar as soon as possible.
He also noted that the animal eats other poisonous creatures such as Portuguese caravels (a favorite dish) and absorbs these toxins, releasing them into the epidermis.
When bitten by a human or animal, these toxins have a direct effect on the nervous system, heart function, and skin cells and can be fatal.
