Nurse tech Shanacris Braga went viral on social media this week when she asked for help on Instagram after environmental agencies removed her marsupial opossum Emilio from her home. A complaint about alleged ill-treatment eventually led to the operation.
Gaucha from Montenegro (RS) shared her daily routine with the animal on social media and made videos in which she urged people not to abuse or kill this species. However, such care was not enough for the duo to stay together.
In an interview with Portal R7Shanacris said he was at work when he received a call that the civilian police and Patram (environmental police of Rio Grande do Sul) were at her house to investigate a report of alleged animal cruelty.
“I went home but didn’t think they were going to take my animal. I invited them, I was polite, I showed Emilio in my huge yard,” she said.
“Patram was ashamed. They came, thinking that this is one thing, and not knowing, but it turned out to be something else. They know it wasn’t a crime. They took him from me in the worst possible way (…), took him in my cat cage, with a rag, food, an egg, water, all of that,” he laments.
Despite being frightened, cowering and even trying to run away from the professionals, Emilio was taken out of the house and taken to Projeto Prereservas, an animal conservation and rehabilitation center run by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.
According to the information provided to Shanakris, he is “all right at first”. On her social media, the nurse appears in some videos crying after losing custody of an animal.
