An impressive and rare record captures the exact moment of mating between male and female rattlesnakes. The images were taken by Haroldo Bauer, known as “Rei das Cobras”, for a documentary about the species and snakes. The video was filmed in Sertao Pernambucano.
— Five twenty-nine in the morning, and now that he’s unstuck. So you can understand how it works: the female is walking very slowly and I’m going back to the male to show you. See this exclusive image. The female curls up,” says Bauer.
The Cobra King spent the whole night watching the mating process of rattlesnakes. According to him, the intimate moment of snakes began around 6:25 pm and lasted until 5:29 am the other day.
After spending the night watching a rare moment, Bauer shows the time when the female rattlesnake “unhooks” from the male.
“Looks like there are a lot of spikes on the side. We will show you everything exclusively. Watch how the hemipenis returns to its place after spending the whole night tied to the female. Look at this exclusive scene,” he comments.
What is a rattlesnake hemipenis?
The hemipenis is a pair of copulatory organs of male squamosals. Hemipenes are usually inverted within the body and proliferate through erectile tissue such as the human penis. Only one is used at a time, and there is some evidence that males alternate its use between copulations.
