What would you do if you were on the beach and suddenly hundreds of strange animals that looked like dead jellyfish approached you? It was with this sense of desperation that the beach residents had to ask for help after a large number of animals took over the beaches.
The event took place in the area of Tasmania, in the southeast of Australia. The local population was horrified after the appearance of hundreds of cylindrical marine animals. The creatures were almost completely transparent.
Julie, a resident of the region, first encountered strange creatures while walking along the beach this Sunday (age 28). She shared the pictures she took on her social media.
Although they look like jellyfish, these animals have been identified as marine salps, 95% water vertebrates that feed on plankton in the same way as the blue whale, the largest living mammal.
Among its characteristics are the rapid growth of animals, occurring at a higher stage than most living beings, the alternation of two life cycles: sexual and asexual.
According to the British tabloid Daily Star, Julie’s photos show the animals in their first life cycle, when they can produce hundreds of clones of themselves. Live specimens reach maturity in just 48 hours, growing by 10% every hour.
Salps are more common in the oceans of the southern hemisphere, where they play an important role in the balance of the ecosystem, although they are not a significant predator.
