This week, SelvAge Mata Atlântica, a non-governmental organization, spotted a small pigeon hawk looking for food in the forested area of Morro do Quininho, in Balneario Pizarras, on the north coast of Santa Catarina.
The images show the bird following small fish or crustaceans as they swim through the stream below it.

According to Patricia Cuadrado, a biologist and president of the non-governmental organization since 2017, these images were taken using camera traps that are camouflaged and hidden in strategic locations. When an animal passes in front of the equipment, a video of that moment is automatically recorded.
The bird has already been recorded several times in the region, but what is interesting for the biologist in the report is that, despite the fact that the lesser pigeon hawk was endangered, he felt at ease, bathing and looking for food. Patricia believes that this indicates the well-preserved area, which is now suitable for a shelter for animals in the same situation.
Almost 200 species of birds and 15 species of mammals have already been cataloged, including endangered animals.

In addition, records of baby anteaters and mao peladas, for example, reveal the environmental quality of Morraria do Quininho, as the set of hills in the area is called. The purpose of these NGO studies is to determine what species live in a given area, as well as their reproductive capacity.

The non-profit organization also promotes tourist attractions, environmental education, popular folklore rescue, courses, and events. Patricia Cuadrado emphasizes that Morraria do Quininho in Balneario Pizarras corresponds to approximately 450 hectares of preserved Atlantic forest where fauna is observed.
