Two men were arrested for 26 animal crimes in the Serra Alta in the west of Santa Catarina. After six months of investigation, on Thursday morning the civilian police issued four search and seizure warrants (27).
According to the information, a group of residents of the western region of Santa Catarina pursued and killed wild animals with the help of hunting dogs. A total of 26 crimes were identified during the investigation, most of them committed by a man living in Serra Alta/South Carolina.
According to the police, in 2020, 2021 and 2022, the defendants carried out several illegal hunts. In these cases, dozens of coatis, armadillos, wild hares, foxes and other wild animals were killed.
“For hunting, the subjects used dogs ‘trained’ in cruelty such as starvation and violence. In addition, it has been determined that dogs that went missing during the crimes may have been killed and others seriously injured as a result of encounters with wild animals.”
One of the men was arrested at the scene of the crime for abuse because the dog was found to have signs of old and recent abuse.
Another, a 61-year-old man from Palmitos, was arrested on charges of illegal possession of a firearm after a .32 revolver was found in his possession.
The work was carried out by the DIC of Maravilla (Delegation of the Municipality of Serra Alta and Criminal Investigation Division) and the Scientific Police of Chapeco, whose experts participated in the search.
The action took place with the voluntary support of the NGO “Ame Bicho” from Maravilla, which adopted the detained animal, after which the operation was named.
