The dog in labor was rescued by Animal Welfare NGO (non-governmental organization) with the support of civilian police officers in the Dalbergia area of Ibiram, in Alto Vale do Itajaí. The operation to rescue the animal began on Tuesday (11).
According to civil police agent Wilton Elias da Rosa, who participated in the action, the dog was found in the backyard of an empty house. The animal was found without food and water, with a lot of flies around.
“We were accompanied by a representative of an NGO (non-governmental organization) for the protection of animals here in the region. When we got there, we went to the back of the residence and saw a bitch in labour, with two dead puppies around her and three live puppies, all surrounded by flies, lots of fly eggs on the bitch and puppies,” the policeman said. Inside the food pot, instead of food, there was dry clay, indicating that the situation had existed in this place for a longer time. Those responsible for the animal have not been found.
“It was not possible to detain the guardians at the scene of the crime because there were no tenants in the house, but the chief of police began an investigation into this situation of ill-treatment. We took the mother dog and the three live puppies we found to the vet, and there she had four more puppies at the clinic,” he said.
At the clinic, two puppies are reported to have died, while two more survived. According to the policeman, among all the puppies there were two very weak ones and the mother did not have enough milk to feed them.
According to the veterinarian who treated the animal, the animal’s malnutrition was severe. According to the professional, the lack of food in the bitch during pregnancy could have caused the death of the puppies.
The birth of a dog would last almost a whole day. Some of the puppies died inside the amniotic sac, because, according to the police officer, at some points the dog did not even have the strength to open the bag in which the puppies were.
“The Delegate has already opened an investigation, the residents of the house could be charged with animal cruelty, which could lead to a prison sentence of two to five years,” concludes Wilton Elias da Rosa.
