The snake underwent an unprecedented procedure in Florianopolis on January 26th. According to veterinarian Priscila Müller, the snake had to undergo an endoscopy due to chronic illness due to nutritional issues. Kaa visited and treated by the vet, 3 years old, belongs to the species Epicrates Crassusalso known as the rainbow boa cerrado.
“The examination went very smoothly, she was stable throughout the procedure, she was under observation all the time. She was intubated, received oxygen and anesthesia during the examination, ”the veterinarian explained.
Priscilla said that Kaa is a pet and belongs to a guardian who has the necessary documents.
eating problems
The veterinarian explained that the boa suffers from regurgitation and has difficulty accepting certain foods. “We were able to improve and reduce with environmental management and dietary changes, but when doing a routine ultrasound, there was an increase in the thickness of the stomach structure and the presence of free fluid in the cavity, which is indicative of inflammation and possible gastritis,” the veterinarian explained.
The condition led to the need for endoscopy. The result of the exam should be known at the beginning of this week.
unprecedented procedure
Priscilla said that the exam was taken in the capital for the first time. “Because there are few veterinarians who work with wild and exotic animals, and even fewer who work with endoscopy, this was the first case of endoscopy in snakes in Florianopolis, and we believe that in the state of Santa Catarina.” , says the expert.
The examination, according to the veterinarian, was made possible thanks to the constant development of veterinary medicine. “As a result, more specific and sophisticated diagnostic methods are becoming more accessible to us and our patients. As in human endoscopy, this study is extremely important to observe the internal structure in real time and be able to collect samples for analysis. This closes a more accurate diagnosis,” he comments.
In addition to veterinarian Kaa, Joao Pires, a gastroenterologist, and Wagner Schirmmer, an anesthesiologist, also participated in the procedure.
