A semi-albino whale calf, accompanied by its mother, was spotted this Sunday (7th) on Itapiruba Beach, located between Laguna and Imbituba, south of Santa Catarina.
The recordings were made by local resident Talita Elber and donated to the Australian Institute. It was the first semi-albino calf recorded during the 2022 breeding season, which runs from July to November, according to the agency.
This species, according to the institute, is born this way because of the genetic makeup of right whales, but as they mature, they tend to turn grey.
“They are usually male and are born to mothers with gray patches, like this pretty mum,” says the Instituto Australis post, which has already racked up more than 4,600 likes on Instagram this Monday afternoon (8).
