This Sunday (19) the Minister of the Environment of Balneario Camboriu, on the north coast of Santa Catarina, responded to a complaint about animal cruelty in the Nova Esperanza area.
Animal abuse was an extremely emaciated horse that fell down in the morning and could no longer get up, so weak. When considering the complaint, it was found that the animal was “fed” only with bread and water.

The family received a call from the RRT (Rescue Operations Group), which is always called in case of large animals. The horse, in addition to being malnourished, had severe abdominal pain and a suspicion that he had swallowed something that clogged the intestines.
To alleviate suffering, euthanasia was found, since, according to veterinarians, there was no chance for the animal to recover. This is not the first time that a family that owns animal cruelty has been condemned.
Environmental protection has registered a statement to the police on this fact, and Semam will issue a fine. Another animal in the family, belonging to the drivers, has already been taken away from them for the same reason of cruel treatment. The family in question also has another mare that will be evaluated to find out what condition she is in and whether she will be withdrawn.
The dead animal will be buried by the Minister of Works team, who will travel to the site with a vehicle suitable for the service. Punishment for cruelty to animals can range from 3 months to one year in prison plus a fine.
