Known throughout Brazil, the jaguar Gabi, who lives in the BioParque Zoo in Rio de Janeiro, turned 20 on Wednesday, 8th. She became popular due to the fact that she illustrated the 50 reais bill. .
Onsa Gabi was born in 2002 at the Rio de Janeiro Zoo to the jaguar family Negona and Alexander the Great. Its beauty attracted such attention that the same year, the Riozoo Foundation was notified by a letter from Casa da Moeda. A letter sent to the zoo asked for a photo of little Gaby to be used on the new Brazilian banknote.
To take the picture, the photographer visited the enclosure for three months every day. Eight years later, in 2010, a 50 reais banknote was issued featuring Gaby’s beautiful face.
As a result, to this day, the famous jaguar is one of the most popular objects to visit in the Bioparc.
At 20 years old, Gaby is already considered an “older” jaguar, as she is older than expected for her species, which ranges from 10 to 15 years old.
For BioParque, the commemoration is a way to raise public awareness of the importance of these animals, as well as the need to conserve endangered species such as jaguars.
