Couple Andrew and Elton Farias, from Balneario Camboriu, on the northern coast of SA, hit a turning point last year. Andrey, who had previously worked as a hairdresser, had a head infection that caused hydrocephalus. Now the husband needs to devote himself entirely to care, since he has lost the ability to move.

Health problems started about a year ago. During this time, Andrew had to spend 58 days in the Marieta Hospital in Itajaí and more than 50 days in the Ruth Cardoso Hospital in Balneario Camboriu. A valve was installed to drain fluid from the head into the bladder.

The couple’s expenses, in addition to rent and food, include medicine and a caregiver. The hairdresser also undergoes physical therapy to restore movement and receives support from other professionals such as a nutritionist, psychologist and speech therapist.

“Caring for someone who is bedridden is not an easy task, especially if that person is someone you choose to share your life with,” Elton writes in one post. On social networks, the professor shares his daily worries and also asks for help from the public who follows him.
Elton held raffles and prize draws through social media, as well as online fundraisers, to raise funds needed for his treatment. Before their illness, they implemented the “Good night, Cinderella do Bem” project, within the framework of which they changed the self-esteem of women in the region in a new way.
