Faced with cases of overcrowding of patients in the corridors and on the stretchers of the morgue at the Marieta Conder Bornhausen Hospital in Itajaí, northern coast of Santa Catarina, the state governor Jorginho Mello (Poland) visited the department this Monday morning (6), to inaugurate a new wing with 41 beds.
The room, which is part of the Madre Teresa complex, is aimed at cancer patients, has 41 hospital beds and is located on the 11th floor of the tower.
“We are investing in healthcare because it is one of our government’s priorities. The opening will contribute to the provision of quality services to the population of Santa Catarina who require this specialized service. I can say that we are working to ensure that the health of Santa Catarina is in excellent condition,” says Governor Jorginho Mello. Vice-Governor Marilisa Bem also attended the ceremony.
In February of this year, another important event took place at the hospital. A new wing of Unakona (high-complexity department in oncology), located on the first two floors of a 15-story complex, has been opened. Increasing the number of beds will expand the hospital, providing greater comfort to patients.
During the morning event, Health Minister Carmen Zanotto emphasized the importance of investment. “When this entire complex is operational, this hospital will have over 608 beds. The new beds opened today mean much more than the beautiful structure we see. This means preparing human resources and qualifying the nurses who will work,” he began.
“That’s why we need to open gradually to offer the highest possible quality of care. And by the first quarter of 2024, we want to see this entire block in action so that we can begin adapting the old block. Our motivation is to guarantee quality care to our population,” concluded Zanotto.
The beds that opened this Monday will primarily serve cancer patients at the facility. “We are very pleased to open this 41-bed floor dedicated to cancer patients,” said Sister Simone Santana, CEO of the hospital.

The Madre Teresa complex will have an emergency and urgent care center, a diagnostic imaging (CDI) center, an outpatient clinic, a milk bank, 241 inpatient beds, 20 adult and 10 neonatal beds, 10 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, 12 operating rooms. , three of which are obstetrics, the Center for Sterile Materials (CME) and the Department of High Complexity Oncology (Unacon), divided into an area of more than 21 thousand square meters.
