Have you ever imagined that you would receive news that you will finally get a kidney transplant after nine years of waiting, but you are in the middle of a trail in a park? This is exactly what happened to Ricardo Medeiros de Oliveira, 48, last Saturday (23).
He was walking along the Pedra do Sino trail in the Serra dos Orgaos National Park in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro when he received a call informing him that there was a compatible kidney in Santa Casa de Juiz de Fora/MG . .
The challenge was to reach the hospital in time for the transplant, as it was located at an altitude of over 2,200 meters and in difficult terrain. That’s when the CBM-RJ (Rio de Janeiro Fire Department) took action.
Rescue on the trail
“It was a race against time. The patient needed to be in the hospital for a maximum of three hours. There was no way to return,” Colonel Leandro Monteiro, secretary of state for civil defense and general commander of CBM-RJ, told CNN Brasil. About 10 soldiers and two aircraft were involved in the rescue operation.
The en route helicopter rescue operation was complicated by weather conditions at 7,500 feet and strong winds in the region, but firefighters were able to remove Oliveira from the route and fly him to Huiz de Fora in less than two hours. The transplant was successful and Oliveira is recovering well from the surgery.
